Signal
Signal is a large-scale, responsive fabric sculpture, centered on a textile collage modelled after a working sail. The sail is made of a variety of elements: cyanotype impressions of glacial erratics, figures of ice fabric from Antarctic and Alaskan glaciers, and archival imagery. It is rigged in a large space with ice cores, which melt into handmade glass vessels. The sound of the dripping water is reprojected into the space. The fabric sculpture changes shape as the ice cores melt and stress is resdistributed through the pulley system.
Wake
Wake is a sound and movement performance incorporating audio of Thwaites Glacier calving events, archival imagery, and improvised sound, objects, poetry, and movement. The calving of icebergs off the front of the Thwaites Glacier ice shelf was recorded using a passive seismic array (essentially, microphones buried in the snow), downloaded from IRIS, and pitched up to the frequency of human hearing. The archival imagery was downloaded from the USGS Earth Explorer.
